Mozilla (purveyors of awesomeness such as Firefox and Thunderbird) announced a couple days ago on the Mozilla Labs blog the development of an add-on called Snowl. It’s not very productive or usable right now (hence being on Mozilla Labs instead of built into Firefox), but where it’s going is definitely worth following.
