Mozilla, the group that oversees scores of volunteer programmers collaborating on the free Firefox Web browser, hopes to attract more visionaries to help change the way people surf the Internet. This week, the group's research arm, Mozilla Labs, is calling for developers, designers and artists across the globe to ponder the future of the browser and submit their creative ideas. "We just touched the surface of the potential on the Web," said Chris Beard, vice president of Mozilla Labs. "Now we need to turn up the volume and to get more people involved, explore what the future could look like and inspire us to do it." As part of the project, Mozilla Labs has teamed up with San Francisco-based Adaptive Path - the designers behind MySpace's face-lift - which created a series of concept videos that showcase the potential browser of the future. In one of the videos, for example, users can push, grab and lift all the objects in the browser, and surfing the Web feels more like moving through a 3-D space, with Web pages semantically organized in clusters. Users can also interact with each other on the Web page, easily sharing data through the browser or a mobile device. "We are trying to make people's interaction with the technology more natural and more physical," said Jesse James Garrett, co-founder and president of Adaptive Path. "Some of these things are right around the corner, and some will take another 10 years to unfold." Mozilla, in Mountain View, hopes the project also attracts other creative types. "Traditionally, you would have to submit code, but now you can just bring an idea, even a sketch on a piece of paper," Beard said. Created in 2003 with startup money from America Online's Netscape division, the group gained visibility when its free Firefox browser emerged as a challenger to Microsoft's Internet Explorer. In the past three years, Firefox's market share of Internet users has grown more than 11 percent. In July, Firefox accounted for 19.2 percent of the market, compared with 73 percent for Microsoft, according to Net Applications, an online measurement company. And earlier this year, Mozilla set the Guinness World Record for the most software downloads, with more than 8 million people downloading Firefox 3 in one day. "They are trying to show that they are taking the leadership of the designers and they are looking to innovate in the areas where there is still room for innovation," said Sara Radicati, president of the Radicati Group, a technology market research firm in Palo Alto. "It has been a very static area. There is not a lot more that you can do in terms of the functionality, but there is always something that can be done about the look and feel of the browser, and that's where the public is always happy to see changes."

11 Vote(s)

Every once in a while you come across a Firefox add-on that is so cool that it just blows you away and you wonder how you ever lived without it. Well I'm pleased to introduce you to an add-on that fits that description. It's the AnyColor add-on from developer Pavlos Touboulidis written specifically for use with Firefox 3. AnyColor is basically a Firefox skinning add-on. It allows you to change the appearance of Firefox without having to restart it to apply a new theme. There are several nice preset themes to choose from (and access to more) but its true power comes from allowing an AnyColor user to customize the appearance of Firefox themselves. After all, isn't customization one of Firefox's strongest features? With AnyColor you can choose from a nearly infinite number of color combos and apply your chosen color(s) to different areas of Firefox's interface. You can also choose to display an image as a background for Firefox's header (includes all visible toolbars) and footer (status bar) by either specifying an online location or a local file. A new feature that has just been added to AnyColor 0.2.0 is an accessibility feature that allows a user to change the font size of Firefox's interface globally so now both web pages (by using Accessibar or similar) and Firefox can be set to display the same sized fonts. AnyColor does not add the ability to change any interface icons or buttons. That would probably weigh AnyColor down quite a bit, and it may or may not be compatible with other themes, you'll just have to experiment on your own because there are simply too many themes to test AnyColor against, however, Pavlos has made it easy for other developers to build upon AnyColor. There are many more features and tweaks available that you'll discover along the way of using AnyColor. For now, this is an add-on that I highly recommend. Please take the time to add a review for AnyColor on its page on the Firefox Add-ons site. It is currently listed as an experimental add-on (all add-ons are classified experimental when first uploaded to AMO) but you have the power to help in getting AnyColor listed in the public section of the Firefox Add-ons site where more Firefox users will be able to discover it. You'll have to login or create an account to install it and to add a review but it takes very little time to do so. On a side note. I had made a request to Pavlos to provide a way for users with visual impairments to enlarge the text size on the Firefox interface and he didn't hesitate at all to implement it making AnyColor a very useful accessibility tool for creating high and low contrast themes with large text that many will benefit from. Visit the AnyColor page on AccessFirefox.org for more information and screen shots.. This additional beta will ensure that changes which may affect website compatibility and changes which affect the user experience will get exposure to a wider audience for feedback and regression testing. The following development deadlines were set for Firefox 3 Beta 5: String freeze will be on Friday, March 7th, 11:59pm PSTCode freeze will be on Tuesday, March 18th, 11:59pm PST Developers should note that this will be the final milestone for string changes and so any changes to strings should be put up for review as soon as possible in order to meet the string freeze deadline this Friday. Please contact a member of the User Experience team if you need help with wording. All P1 blockers are to be fixed for Firefox 3 Beta 5. For the next two weeks the tree will remain under “blocker rules”, but developers should check the tree status before checking in a patch. After code freeze, we expect a shorter baking period before handing off to the Build and QA teams for release.
Firefox Vulnerable By Default. From: www.0x000000.com Don't blame the extension developers this time :) You probably thought otherwise after they just released version 2.0.0.12. a couple of hours ago, that had a fix for numerous other vulnerabilities. But guess what? we are going to see 2.0.0.13 pretty soon I guess. I snared at Mozilla before: don't patch vulnerabilities for fifty percent, take the time and fix the cause. Because directory traversal through plugins is all nice and such, we don't need it. We can trick Firefox itself in traversing directories back. I found another information leak that is very serious because we are able to read out all preferences set in Firefox, or just open or include about every file stored in the Mozilla program files directory, and this without any mandatory settings or plugins.

6 Vote(s)

The process of building and testing builds which will become Firefox 3 Beta 3 began on Monday at 7:20pm PST when development handed over control to the build team for branching and tagging. Things are moving along well, and release candidates are now being tested by the Quality Assurance team. Anyone who wishes to participate in this effort can join the Firefox 3 Beta 3 Test Day this Friday, February 8th. In order to limit distribution of this not-yet-tested release, anyone who was linked to the release candidate download directory will be redirected to this announcement. While we appreciate the attention and devotion of our users, we ask them to wait until we have completed testing. If all goes well during the testing, Firefox 3 Beta 3 will be released on February 12th in the evening, Pacific Standard Time. You can track our progress on the Firefox 3 Beta 3 Release Checklist.

5 Vote(s)

If you have time, check out and test intensive the new and improved Features in Firefox 3 like Addon-Manager , Security/Privacy , Places (Bookmarks/History) , the new location bar and the Download Manager . If you see an issue, raise it in #testday so people there can confirm it. Then search for the bug in Bugzilla . If it's not on file, log the bug and again mention it in #testday so that it can be confirmed. Please visit http://quality.mozilla.org/events/test-days for all otherinfo regarding the event.
