We're done. Firefox 3 is going to be launched very soon. In anticipation of this long-awaited event, the folks in the Mozilla community have been writing extensively about the new and improved features you'll see in the browser. The new features cover the full range from huge and game-changing to ones so subtle you may not notice them until you realize that using Firefox is just somehow easier and better. The range of improved features is similar — whole back-end systems have been rebuilt from scratch, while other features have been tweaked slightly or redesigned in small ways. Overall the result is the fastest, safest, slimmest, and easiest to use version of Firefox yet. We hope you like it.

10 Vote(s)

All platforms running Firefox (including version 3): Feedreader Firefox extension Sage is a popular favorite, but the original developers appeared to abandon the project leaving Firefox 3 users in the lurch. Luckily another group took it up, readied it for Firefox 3, and renamed it Sage-Too. Sage-Too does exactly what Sage did: integrates your feed subscriptions right into Firefox, and displays the subscription list in your browser sidebar, and the feed content in a browser window. A nice combination of offline reader that lives right in your browser, Sage (and now Sage-Too) can help you keep on top of feeds without leaving Firefox or depending on Google Reader or Bloglines. Sage Too is a free download for Firefox, and works with Firefox 3.

9 Vote(s)

Although we continually juggle inbound requests for new service integrations, we couldn't be happier about this latest release with Digg and Pownce built in. Two weeks ago, we released the Flock 1.2 beta and have since been inundated with heaps of great encouraging comments from our users. Although we're generally not driven by an interest in feeding the vices of our users, the words 'addicting' and 'addictive' have been used more than ever in the way that we’ve seen our browser described since we integrated Digg and Pownce into the experience.

8 Vote(s)

Yesterday, Net Applications released its latest market share report for May 2008. Firefox showed a nice improvement in the April to May timeframe, going from 17.76% to 18.41% worldwide market share. Net Applications provides their own interpretation here. The interesting part of the story is that while Firefox 3 continues to show rapid adoption, most of our growth was driven by increased usage of Firefox 2. In other words, Firefox 3 adoption is not coming at the expense of Firefox 2 usage (it’s not simply the case of existing users updating from Fx2 to Fx3). Clearly, the overall health of the Firefox brand is amazingly strong as we head towards the official release of Firefox 3.

12 Vote(s)

The bookmarklets translate either the entire current page you are visiting or a bit of text that you have selected on the page. Currently there are translation bookmarklets available for two services; those using Google's translation service and those using Altavista's Babel Fish translation service.Of course I am not the only to have made bookmarklets for translation, but this collection is complete as far as language pairs go and uses two of the most popular translation services. There's also a bookmarklet to leave translation mode. Of course it's quite a lot of bookmarklets and you probably won't ever need them all, so you could bookmark the page with the bookmarklets and whenever you need a translation bookmarklet for the first time you just install it.

One of the key reasons that Mozilla and its technologies are open source is the Mozilla Public License (MPL). Now, the closely watched MPL may be seeing an update after remaining unchanged for years. The MPL is one of the defining features of the Mozilla Foundation, its related entities and products -- providing users with a license that is open for inspection and participation as well as commercial integration. It's also a license that has remained the same since 1999. But that may change after this week, now that Mozilla Corp.'s John Lilly is succeeding longtime CEO Mitchell Baker, who was one of the primary authors of the MPL. Baker, who will continue at the organization, is now shifting roles. Accordingly, she said she may now have time to devote to issues that haven't been considered in some time -- like the MPL. "The Mozilla license hasn't been revised in years," Baker said in response to a question from InternetNews.com during a recent public Webcast. "It has been in the back of my mind that it's time to look at it and see if a revision makes sense." Baker said her duties as leader of Mozilla Corp. and the non-profit Mozilla Foundation (for both of which she will continue as chairman) had until now demanded the bulk of her attention. "I have looked at it a few times and taken a few steps but never had time or focus to make my way through it and come up with a recommendation," Baker said. "I think I will probably try and do that." "I feel my biggest set of unique talents right now is the ability to talk to large sets of people about the role of Mozilla and its technology," she added. "So if I had to pick one thing to focus on, that would be it." It's not immediately clear what changes would be in store for the MPL. Patents represented a major, divisive issue in the recently revised GPL version 3 open source license. The GPL hadn't been updated in fifteen years and the process of rewriting it became rife with disagreement at times, with Linux creator Linux Torvalds opposing the changes. For Mozilla, patents may not necessarily be as large an issue. Baker said that the MPL was among the first licenses to have a patent-defense clause. She also conceded that, in her view, the MPL is "draconian" in its patent-defense clause -- and it may or not be right. Still, "I wouldn't expect anything dramatic," she said of plans for a revised MPL. "But it's like a piece of code that hasn't been changed in five or six years -- so there is undoubtedly stuff in there that seemed important at the time that isn't important now." Baker likely won't be alone in looking at revisions to the MPL. For one thing, Mozilla is hiring a general counsel -- in fact, she said Mozilla plans to hire the same person who wrote the Patent Defense clauses found in the current MPL version. Neither Baker nor Lilly, who was also on the Webcast, elaborated on those plans.

5 Vote(s)

Firefox is hot! Though the initial wave of enthusiasm has leveled off, Firefox is still gaining in popularity, downloads are still increasing, and Firefox is emerging as a front-running web browser. It is not just a good browser; it has also achieved something else that is more difficult to measure. It has made web browsing fun again and brought new spirit to an arena that had become stale. With Firefox, the Mozilla Foundation made a U-turn that probably ensured its survival. It started focusing on users, targeting releases directly at them instead of at developers and hardcore power users. Some companies have started to switch, extension authors have adopted the Mozilla platform for writing their tools and applications, and web developers are being turned on by the high level of web-standards support. This glossary is by no means exhaustive--it is meant to be a teaser to lead you to explore more. Get Firefox Hacks to dig deeper--you'll find references to specific chapters or hacks in the book throughout this glossary.

9 Vote(s)

AOL has a long history on the internet, being one of the first companies to really get people online. Throughout its lifetime, it has been involved with a number of high profile acquisitions, perhaps the largest of which was the 1999 acquisition of the Netscape Communications Corporation. Netscape was known to many as the thought leader in web browsing, and had developed a number of complementary pieces of software that allowed for a rich suite of internet tools. At the time of the acquisition, the Netscape team had begun working on converting their flagship product - the Netscape Communicator web suite - into open source software, under a new name: Mozilla. AOL played a significant role in the launch of the Netscape 6 browser, the first Mozilla-based, Netscape-branded browser that was released in 2000 and continued to solely fund the development and marketing efforts of Netscape-branded browsers. In 2003, an independent foundation was created to support the continued development of the open source web suite. AOL was a major source of support for the Mozilla Foundation and the company continued to develop versions of the Netscape browser based on the work of the foundation. While internal groups within AOL have invested a great deal of time and energy in attempting to revive Netscape Navigator, these efforts have not been successful in gaining market share from Microsoft's Internet Explorer. Recently, support for the Netscape browser has been limited to a handful of engineers tasked with creating a skinned version of Firefox with a few extensions. AOL's focus on transitioning to an ad-supported web business leaves little room for the size of investment needed to get the Netscape browser to a point many of its fans expect it to be. Given AOL's current business focus and the success the Mozilla Foundation has had in developing critically-acclaimed products, we feel it's the right time to end development of Netscape branded browsers, hand the reigns fully to Mozilla and encourage Netscape users to adopt Firefox.

6 Vote(s)

A stability and security update to SeaMonkey, the community-driven continuation of the all-in-one Mozilla Application Suite, has been released. As detailed in the SeaMonkey 1.1.7 section of the Mozilla Foundation Security Advisories page, the upgrade includes the same security patches as Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.10, which was also made available this week. In addition to the security fixes, SeaMonkey 1.1.7 also includes several other small bug fixes; interested users can consult the rough SeaMonkey 1.1.7 changelog for more details. Unlike Firefox 2.0.0.10, SeaMonkey 1.1.7 was released after the regression relating to the drawImage method of the canvas element (bug 405584) was reported and fixed, so there will be no need for an equivalent to the Firefox 2.0.0.11 release. SeaMonkey 1.1.7 can be downloaded from SeaMonkey 1.1.7 section of the SeaMonkey Download & Releases page. More information about the update can be found in the SeaMonkey 1.1.7 Release Notes.

5 Vote(s)

The process of building and testing builds which will become Firefox 3 Beta 2 began today at 11:10am PST when development handed over control to the build team for branching and tagging. As always, the build team will generate a series of release candidates which will be tested by the Quality Assurance team. Anyone who wishes to participate in this effort can join the Firefox 3 Beta 2 Test Day this Friday, December 14th.In order to limit distribution of this not-yet-tested release, anyone who was linked to the release candidate download directory will be redirected to this announcement. While we appreciate the attention and devotion of our users, we ask them to wait until we have completed testing. If all goes well during the testing, Firefox 3 Beta 2 will be released on December 21st in the early afternoon, Pacific Standard Time.
As we get closer to the release of Firefox 3, extension and theme compatibility with the new browser is an important issue. We all want to ensure that when Firefox 3 is launched, users do not find that all of their extensions have been disabled because of incompatibility or insecure updates.Extension authors should be mindful of the following changes that will affect them when updating for Firefox 3: Firefox 3 will use a three-part versioning system, as opposed to the four parts used in Firefox 2. In order to specify compatibility with security and stability releases, authors should use 3.0.* instead of 3.0.0.*. Important: As much can change between now and the release of Firefox 3, extensions hosted on addons.mozilla.org cannot yet use 3.0.* and must specify compatibility with the current beta release. Extensions that previously used 3.0.* or 3.0.0.* have been changed to be compatible with a maxVersion of 3.0b2. A list of the versions currently allowed on AMO is here. Extensions now require a secure update channel to function - either by using an updateURL with SSL or by using a new updateKey. Add-ons hosted at addons.mozilla.org are not affected by this. This is partly because we have to stabilize the UI design before we know what icons we are going to need, partly because dropping in new images is pretty low risk in terms of performance and stability regressions, and partly because producing a large number of icons takes awhile.

11 Vote(s)

Firefox sometimes gets a bad reputation for crashing or locking up when a plugin such as Adobe Flash or Windows Media Player causes a problem. This project aims to solve this issue by adding code to Firefox such that when a plugin misbehaves, a dialog is presented informing the user so that they can take corrective action (disabling the plugin) or file a bug report with the right party. As a minimum this code will identify that a plugin is to blame; later versions would also strive to inform the user of the plugin's name and provide options such as temporarily disabling the plugin. Plugin Watcher is a project by students of Seneca College in Toronto, Canada.
