The Firefox web browser has been ported to the Qt widget toolkit through a collaborative development effort by Nokia and Mozilla. This port will facilitate much stronger visual integration between Firefox and KDE-based Linux environments and will also simplify the process of bringing Firefox to mobile platforms that support Qt.When Mozilla was developing Firefox 3, the browser's underlying Gecko rendering engine adopted the Cairo drawing library across all platforms. In order to port Firefox to Qt, the developers had to create a new QPainter backend for Cairo. Mozilla's Vladimir Vukievi contributed to that effort and wrote about some of the first steps several months ago. "I hope that in the future the Qt port will be a toplevel supported Gecko port, alongside gtk2, Win32, and OSX, but there's still a bunch of work needed to make that happen," he wrote.

9 Vote(s)

During a sit-down chat at the Black Hat security conference here, Snyder announced plans to launch three new initiatives around threat modeling, training and vulnerability metrics that push the envelope around sharing and collaborating with the rest of the industry. The most interesting of three centers around a formal threat modeling process for Firefox Next, the next major browser makeover coming from Mozilla. Snyder has hired New York-based consultants Matasano Security to pore over the Firefox code to find potential attack vectors and other weaknesses and recommend mitigations to harden the browser from hacker attacks. When the threat modeling work is done, Snyder will do something unprecedented - the information (threats and mitigations) will be released to the public.

12 Vote(s)

Not only is it the primary means we have of distributing Firefox, but it's also many people's first exposure to the Mozilla Project in generala4in other words, lots of ground to cover! We started the redesign process last fall when, after a fairly exhaustive search to find the right design partner, we enlisted an agency out of Chicago called the Royal Order. Our joint goal was to create a site that promoted the awesomeness of Firefox 3 while also giving newcomers a feel for what Mozilla is all about.

9 Vote(s)

The recently concluded 2008 Mozilla Summit, held in Whistler, Canada, was impacted by a rock slide that cut off the main highway between Whistler and Vancouver, where most attendees planned to depart via airplane. In true open-source fashion, summit attendees collaborated on a solution, opening a Bugzilla bug (severity: "blocker"), posting crash dumps, and proposing solutions, including chartering a flight (which would land first in TRUNK, then BRANCH). Eventually, attendees settled on a workaround which seems to have been successful. For next year's summit, organizers might want to consider a location with more redundancy.

6 Vote(s)

Mozilla, the group that oversees scores of volunteer programmers collaborating on the free Firefox Web browser, hopes to attract more visionaries to help change the way people surf the Internet. This week, the group's research arm, Mozilla Labs, is calling for developers, designers and artists across the globe to ponder the future of the browser and submit their creative ideas. "We just touched the surface of the potential on the Web," said Chris Beard, vice president of Mozilla Labs. "Now we need to turn up the volume and to get more people involved, explore what the future could look like and inspire us to do it." As part of the project, Mozilla Labs has teamed up with San Francisco-based Adaptive Path - the designers behind MySpace's face-lift - which created a series of concept videos that showcase the potential browser of the future. In one of the videos, for example, users can push, grab and lift all the objects in the browser, and surfing the Web feels more like moving through a 3-D space, with Web pages semantically organized in clusters. Users can also interact with each other on the Web page, easily sharing data through the browser or a mobile device. "We are trying to make people's interaction with the technology more natural and more physical," said Jesse James Garrett, co-founder and president of Adaptive Path. "Some of these things are right around the corner, and some will take another 10 years to unfold." Mozilla, in Mountain View, hopes the project also attracts other creative types. "Traditionally, you would have to submit code, but now you can just bring an idea, even a sketch on a piece of paper," Beard said. Created in 2003 with startup money from America Online's Netscape division, the group gained visibility when its free Firefox browser emerged as a challenger to Microsoft's Internet Explorer. In the past three years, Firefox's market share of Internet users has grown more than 11 percent. In July, Firefox accounted for 19.2 percent of the market, compared with 73 percent for Microsoft, according to Net Applications, an online measurement company. And earlier this year, Mozilla set the Guinness World Record for the most software downloads, with more than 8 million people downloading Firefox 3 in one day. "They are trying to show that they are taking the leadership of the designers and they are looking to innovate in the areas where there is still room for innovation," said Sara Radicati, president of the Radicati Group, a technology market research firm in Palo Alto. "It has been a very static area. There is not a lot more that you can do in terms of the functionality, but there is always something that can be done about the look and feel of the browser, and that's where the public is always happy to see changes."

11 Vote(s)

Canvas elements introduce the ability to render two dimensional, and soon three dimensional, graphics directly through web pages without a download. The graphics are part of the next-generation HTML 5 standard, and it's something Opera and Safari have already implemented. The problem is the leading browser on the internet, Microsoft's Internet Explorer, doesn't support canvas elements and have announced no plans to support it in the future.
You may remember a project called Enso, a software program developed by Humanized - the same folks who brought you Songza. The program is an application launcher which provides you with a different way to navigate and interact with your computer through the use of keyboard shortcuts and typed commands. As we noted before, Enso appears to have been abandoned by the developers who created it since they were snatched up to work at Mozilla. However, the software itself was open-sourced. But now, those same developers are using the concepts brought forth by Enso to create a whole new UI for Firefox called Ubiquity. What's Ubiquity? The Ubiquity project aims to solve problems involving today's web applications and how we interact with them. Atul Varma describes this on his blog:

9 Vote(s)

We know we've been very close to passing this mark in several European countries, including Finland, Slovenia and Poland, according to Xiti, so we were excited to see this news about Indonesia. As some background information, Indonesia is the world's fourth most populous country, with a relatively low, but rapidly growing internet penetration rate.

13 Vote(s)

In the concept video I recently did for laying out the interface paradigms for Firefox Mobile, I listed five guiding principals. 1. Touch it with your finger 2. Large targets are good 3. Visual Momentum and Physics are compelling 4. Typing is difficult 5. Content is kingIt’s these principals that inform the design of new features long after the original design as been coded, released, and iterated on. In discussions with the perspicacious Mike Beltzner, another design principal emerged. 6. Use modal overlays sparingly, if at all.To be sure we are on the same page—I’m may be partaking in the dangerous hobby of coining new terminology—an overlay is simply a content area that sits in front of the content beneath it. The aspect that makes a modal overlay modal is that when it is up, the content “beneath” the overlay cannot be acted upon until the overlay is dismissed. Although a modal overlay may be visually transparent, it is never interaction transparent: you must always take action, like clicking “okay”, before continuing with your workflow. While I’m living dangerously, I’ll toss one more phrase into the mix: a state-forgetting modal overlay is an overlay whose state is reset every time it is summoned. That is, any work you do in the overlay is lost when you dismiss it.Some examples of modal overlays are dialog/monologue boxes, ever-so-Web-2.0 Lightboxes, and the bookmarks interface for Mobile Safari. Some examples of overlays that aren’t modal are transparent messages and the OS X’s on-screen display for volume. The former have a number of interaction pitfalls that the latter do not share. What’s wrong with modal overlays? In a word, they are modal: You are either interacting with the content or the overlay. Modal overlays don’t allow you to refer back and forth between two sources of information, or move fluidly between two actions. The second problem with modal overlays are that they are disconnected and disjoint from other overlays—knowing how to access one doesn’t yield a physical sense of how to access another one; they do not scale to give a unified, cohesive interface.

10 Vote(s)

The record achievement certificate was awarded in front of a 300 strong community gathering in central London to celebrate the launch of Firefox 3, and the Guinness World Record feat.
Many of us at Mozilla and within the Mozilla community were excited when Stephen Colbert gave Firefox 3 his “Colbert Bump” on the day of Firefox 3’s launch (a big thanks to Jonathan Zittrain). You can watch the video here. Download Day was a wild success, and we were happy to share some thanks and credit with Stephen. However, a few questions naturally arose, e.g., what was the direct impact of the Colbert Bump? and could the effect be precisely measured? Here’s what we did: we looked at downloads of Firefox 3 by users within the U.S. – and then we drilled down to a minute-by-minute view to see what, if anything, could be detected. At minute 23 of the broadcast, Colbert said, “Firefox 3 just got the Colbert Bump.” What happened next? We saw a big spike in downloads exactly one and two minutes later:

9 Vote(s)
