It was on this day, 5 years ago, that we launched the Mozilla Foundation to provide a lifeboat for the Mozilla project as Netscape/AOL/Time Warner, Mozilla's former sponsor and primary contributor, was slipping into Microsoft's warm technology embrace and abandoning its 5 years of work on Mozilla. With a new Mozilla Roadmap in hand, and just a handful of people, we had high hopes, but little mind share and even less market share. A little more than a year later, we would be shipping Firefox 1.0 and changing the face of the Web.

7 Vote(s)

I’ve previously described the process we use on AMO for rotating the featured add-ons. As we start a new month, we’ve rotated many of the add-on based on their performance. We examine how many additional active add-on users have been added to the Firefox add-ons user base (in absolute numbers) and the relative user retention performance — do users who downloaded the add-on continue to use it? Those with better overall performance stay on the list, the other slots on the list get rotated to uncover new, great add-ons. In this rotation we had 21 add-ons get rotated out and 23 come in. You can see the resulting list for July 2008.

8 Vote(s)

When we say fast, we “mean 140+ new tools” fast, and we probably missed some, too.
Now that Mozilla's locked down Firefox 3's final feature set with Friday's push of release candidate 1, it's official: while Firefox 3 boasts some great new features like a smart address bar and better bookmarks manager, the best reason to upgrade will be for the performance improvements. Firefox 3 is noticeably faster and more stable than Firefox 2 to the casual user and Mozilla engineers have numbers that show it will be the fastest browser on the market. Tech site TechWeb reports:Mozilla VP of engineering Mike Schroepfer claims that Firefox 3 is 9.3x faster than Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 and 2.7x faster than Firefox 2 in terms of JavaScript performance. In terms of Gmail message load time, he claims Firefox 3 is 6.8x faster than IE7 and 3.8x faster than Firefox 2. And he says Firefox 3 beats Apple's Safari, which is also faster than Firefox 2.

7 Vote(s)

So, builds from the Firefox trunk (development code repository) are properly called Minefield. Its logo, a lit dynamite stick stuck into the globe, makes things even clearer. With Thunderbird, if you go the nightlies way, you should know you are checking your email with a shredder: a bad move and it’s buh-bye to your beloved years-old mail archive.
