During a sit-down chat at the Black Hat security conference here, Snyder announced plans to launch three new initiatives around threat modeling, training and vulnerability metrics that push the envelope around sharing and collaborating with the rest of the industry. The most interesting of three centers around a formal threat modeling process for Firefox Next, the next major browser makeover coming from Mozilla. Snyder has hired New York-based consultants Matasano Security to pore over the Firefox code to find potential attack vectors and other weaknesses and recommend mitigations to harden the browser from hacker attacks. When the threat modeling work is done, Snyder will do something unprecedented - the information (threats and mitigations) will be released to the public.

12 Vote(s)

Mozilla (purveyors of awesomeness such as Firefox and Thunderbird) announced a couple days ago on the Mozilla Labs blog the development of an add-on called Snowl. It's not very productive or usable right now (hence being on Mozilla Labs instead of built into Firefox), but where it's going is definitely worth following. Snowl will be a sort of aggregator for every interaction you have on the Internet. It will allow you to follow online forum discussions, Twitter, Plurk, AIM, Google Talk, blogs, email, etc., etc. from one convenient place in your browser via a "Message List" view or a "River of Messages" view. Currently, Snowl is limited to adding RSS/Atom feeds and a Twitter account plus it lacks the ability to compose messages or comments, a taboo in the sociability of Web 2.0. Despite this, I feel that it is definitely where the world of web browsing is heading and I'm glad to see an open source solution like Firefox leading the way.

10 Vote(s)

The recently concluded 2008 Mozilla Summit, held in Whistler, Canada, was impacted by a rock slide that cut off the main highway between Whistler and Vancouver, where most attendees planned to depart via airplane. In true open-source fashion, summit attendees collaborated on a solution, opening a Bugzilla bug (severity: "blocker"), posting crash dumps, and proposing solutions, including chartering a flight (which would land first in TRUNK, then BRANCH). Eventually, attendees settled on a workaround which seems to have been successful. For next year's summit, organizers might want to consider a location with more redundancy.

6 Vote(s)

Mozilla, the group that oversees scores of volunteer programmers collaborating on the free Firefox Web browser, hopes to attract more visionaries to help change the way people surf the Internet. This week, the group's research arm, Mozilla Labs, is calling for developers, designers and artists across the globe to ponder the future of the browser and submit their creative ideas. "We just touched the surface of the potential on the Web," said Chris Beard, vice president of Mozilla Labs. "Now we need to turn up the volume and to get more people involved, explore what the future could look like and inspire us to do it." As part of the project, Mozilla Labs has teamed up with San Francisco-based Adaptive Path - the designers behind MySpace's face-lift - which created a series of concept videos that showcase the potential browser of the future. In one of the videos, for example, users can push, grab and lift all the objects in the browser, and surfing the Web feels more like moving through a 3-D space, with Web pages semantically organized in clusters. Users can also interact with each other on the Web page, easily sharing data through the browser or a mobile device. "We are trying to make people's interaction with the technology more natural and more physical," said Jesse James Garrett, co-founder and president of Adaptive Path. "Some of these things are right around the corner, and some will take another 10 years to unfold." Mozilla, in Mountain View, hopes the project also attracts other creative types. "Traditionally, you would have to submit code, but now you can just bring an idea, even a sketch on a piece of paper," Beard said. Created in 2003 with startup money from America Online's Netscape division, the group gained visibility when its free Firefox browser emerged as a challenger to Microsoft's Internet Explorer. In the past three years, Firefox's market share of Internet users has grown more than 11 percent. In July, Firefox accounted for 19.2 percent of the market, compared with 73 percent for Microsoft, according to Net Applications, an online measurement company. And earlier this year, Mozilla set the Guinness World Record for the most software downloads, with more than 8 million people downloading Firefox 3 in one day. "They are trying to show that they are taking the leadership of the designers and they are looking to innovate in the areas where there is still room for innovation," said Sara Radicati, president of the Radicati Group, a technology market research firm in Palo Alto. "It has been a very static area. There is not a lot more that you can do in terms of the functionality, but there is always something that can be done about the look and feel of the browser, and that's where the public is always happy to see changes."

11 Vote(s)

Many of us at Mozilla and within the Mozilla community were excited when Stephen Colbert gave Firefox 3 his “Colbert Bump” on the day of Firefox 3’s launch (a big thanks to Jonathan Zittrain). You can watch the video here. Download Day was a wild success, and we were happy to share some thanks and credit with Stephen. However, a few questions naturally arose, e.g., what was the direct impact of the Colbert Bump? and could the effect be precisely measured? Here’s what we did: we looked at downloads of Firefox 3 by users within the U.S. – and then we drilled down to a minute-by-minute view to see what, if anything, could be detected. At minute 23 of the broadcast, Colbert said, “Firefox 3 just got the Colbert Bump.” What happened next? We saw a big spike in downloads exactly one and two minutes later:

9 Vote(s)

According to an independent study by Google Switzerland, IBM Internet Security Systems and CSG ETH Zurich, Mozilla Firefox users are the safest among web surfers (on average), because they are more likely to be running the latest and most secure version of their browser. This research analyzed the user agent headers sent with Google search queries beetween January 2007 and June 2008 (lots of data points!), finding that more than 83% of the surveyed Firefox browsers were up-to-date. Safari scored 65.3%, Opera 58.1% and IE, not surprising, was the worst with 47.6% (it should be noticed, though, that IE6 has been considered, rightly, an “insecure version”).

11 Vote(s)

Mozilla's Firefox 3 web browser, which was officially released one week ago, has already been downloaded over 20 million times since the official launch. This is a noteworthy achievement for the open source browser, which is rapidly eroding the dominance of Microsoft's Internet Explorer. The number of Firefox 3 downloads continues to climb, but currently represents only a portion of Firefox's 170 million daily users. This is primarily because Mozilla has not yet rolled out the new version to existing Firefox 2 users through the update channel. In response to an inquiry, Mozilla told us that they have not finalized the schedule for when Firefox 3 will be made available to Firefox 2 users through the update channel, but they suspect that it will happen within the next two or three months.

10 Vote(s)

So Oshayr created a new bookmark from the about:config page and ticked the box next to Load this bookmark in the sidebar. Now, when reading through a post dedicated to about:config tweaks, Oshayr selects and drags tweaks to the filter box.
It's been over a year and a half since the Mozilla Corporation shipped its last major Web browser update, Firefox 2. For cloud computing companies like Mozilla, that amount of time is an eon, and equivalent in many ways to the amount of time Microsoft took to ship Windows Vista. But one thing that hasn't changed for Firefox since the first version shipped in November 2004 is that this impressive browser is still the one to beat. Microsoft can make a lot of noise about Internet Explorer 8 and Apple can muddy the waters with its unnecessary (and dishonestly distributed) Safari browser. None of it matters. When it comes to Web browsers, there's Firefox and then there's everything else.

10 Vote(s)

Firefox 3 is a massive upgrade over Firefox 2 with more than 14,000 changes over the 2.0 generation that was released in October of 2006. The great majority of those changes happened under the hood and aren’t immediately visible to, but there are enough user-centric improvements to make this new version a worthwhile update. If you expect Firefox 3 to be drastically different in appearance, features and UI philosophy than what the previous version offered, then you will be disappointed up to the fact when you may wonder if this new browser should have been an incremental and minor upgrade instead. For instance, when you first fire up Firefox 3, you will hardly notice any visible difference to the previous version. However, there was nothing really wrong with the previous interface anyway and we are just fine with an evolutionary modification. There are many minor tweaks subtle enhancements that you may be noticing only over days of regular usage. To us, the interface looks like an intelligently, thoroughly improved product that offers much more fluid browsing experience than the previous version. As the time goes by, you really begin noticing that Mozilla dramatically improved the browser code, mostly evident in visible speed improvements. Here is a low-down of the most important Firefox 3 improvements.

10 Vote(s)
