Every once in a while you come across a Firefox add-on that is so cool that it just blows you away and you wonder how you ever lived without it. Well I'm pleased to introduce you to an add-on that fits that description. It's the AnyColor add-on from developer Pavlos Touboulidis written specifically for use with Firefox 3. AnyColor is basically a Firefox skinning add-on. It allows you to change the appearance of Firefox without having to restart it to apply a new theme. There are several nice preset themes to choose from (and access to more) but its true power comes from allowing an AnyColor user to customize the appearance of Firefox themselves. After all, isn't customization one of Firefox's strongest features? With AnyColor you can choose from a nearly infinite number of color combos and apply your chosen color(s) to different areas of Firefox's interface. You can also choose to display an image as a background for Firefox's header (includes all visible toolbars) and footer (status bar) by either specifying an online location or a local file. A new feature that has just been added to AnyColor 0.2.0 is an accessibility feature that allows a user to change the font size of Firefox's interface globally so now both web pages (by using Accessibar or similar) and Firefox can be set to display the same sized fonts. AnyColor does not add the ability to change any interface icons or buttons. That would probably weigh AnyColor down quite a bit, and it may or may not be compatible with other themes, you'll just have to experiment on your own because there are simply too many themes to test AnyColor against, however, Pavlos has made it easy for other developers to build upon AnyColor. There are many more features and tweaks available that you'll discover along the way of using AnyColor. For now, this is an add-on that I highly recommend. Please take the time to add a review for AnyColor on its page on the Firefox Add-ons site. It is currently listed as an experimental add-on (all add-ons are classified experimental when first uploaded to AMO) but you have the power to help in getting AnyColor listed in the public section of the Firefox Add-ons site where more Firefox users will be able to discover it. You'll have to login or create an account to install it and to add a review but it takes very little time to do so. On a side note. I had made a request to Pavlos to provide a way for users with visual impairments to enlarge the text size on the Firefox interface and he didn't hesitate at all to implement it making AnyColor a very useful accessibility tool for creating high and low contrast themes with large text that many will benefit from. Visit the AnyColor page on AccessFirefox.org for more information and screen shots..
firefox 3.0.1 and disabled add-onsI've read around the blogs and twitterverse that people are seeing some of their add-ons disabled by the just-released Firefox 3.0.1 security and stability update. There's good news and bad news here.First the bad news. Yes, several add-ons seem to be disabled with the update to Firefox 3.0.1. This should not have happened and is most likely the result of a mistake in the add-on's Firefox compatibility string. Where the author should have used "3.0.*" they instead used just "3.0" (note the missing "*")The good news is that it's only a few add-ons and Mozilla folks are reaching out to those authors to help them fix their version compatibility. I think we'll see pretty quick updates from those vendors.

9 Vote(s)

I had an interesting discussion today about Firefox with Mozilla's Mike Schroepfer and Mike Beltzner. One of the things we drilled into a bit was the address bar in Firefox 3 (download). It's being called the "awesome bar" at Mozilla, and while it will end up with an official name eventually (the "smart location bar"), what it does for users can fairly be described as awesome. And as it's probably the most important touchpoint in the browser, it's worth exploring not just what it means for users but for Mozilla as well. The Firefox 3 address bar helps users auto-complete the URLs they type in, but it's smarter than it appears at first. The choices that pop to the top of the list as you type are not based just on best text match, but on your previous behavior. Sites you visit frequently pop up higher on the list. Bookmarked sites also get special treatment. And since Firefox now has a new high-performance database to record your behavior, it can track what you do over a long period of time; it doesn't have to flush your history every week or so to keep the performance up.

10 Vote(s)

If so, head on over to AMO and claim your Add-ons Developer t-shirt (also available under Developer Tools > T-Shirt Request). If your extension is not currently compatible, you have until March 18th (that’s the sign-up deadline, not the Firefox 3 release date) to claim the swag. Also, if your add-on was developed by a team and you need more than one shirt, please contact us and we’ll do our best to make arrangements. If you need help getting compatible, I recommend checking out developer.mozilla.org or hitting #extdev on irc.mozilla.org. There are talented contributors willing to help, just need to ask. As an extra special thank you, if your add-on is one of the top 50 most used add-ons by Firefox 3 users on the Firefox 3 release day, Mozilla will offer to sponsor (for an amount we will determine) a party for you and your friends. That is, Mozilla will chip in for you and your friends to celebrate your tools success! Mozilla will be in contact with the top add-ons shortly after the Firefox 3 release. Thank you to everyone who has developed an add-on!

9 Vote(s)

Mozilla is in informal talks with mobile operators about its mobile Firefox project, which the organization hopes will shake up the market as much as the introduction of the desktop browser did in 2004. "Mozilla's mission is to break open a closed market," said Mike Schroepfer, Mozilla's vice president of engineering, during a visit to London earlier this week. But "it won't happen overnight." The impact, however, will be felt before year's end. By then, Mozilla is aiming to release a mobile browser for two operating systems: embedded Linux and Microsoft's Windows Mobile. At this point, operators and carriers "want to know how much it will cost," Schroepfer said. That's an easy answer: mobile Firefox will be free, Schroepfer said. But the introduction of a free mobile browser is potentially threatening to some operators. Some handset manufacturers and carriers rigidly control applications and services, maximizing their revenue by creating so-called "walled gardens" where only their own for-fee services can be accessed.

6 Vote(s)

Firefox only: Somewhere between web-based email and a standalone desktop client there's Simple Mail, a Firefox extension that embeds an email client right inside a Firefox tab. Manage all your messages in Simple Mail, which can notify you of new incoming messages at a rate you define for any number of POP or IMAP email accounts. Simple Mail lists your messages in a familiar three-paned view where you can read, compose, and send messages, as well as maintain an address book. I had trouble getting Simple Mail to work with Gmail and IMAP in Firefox 3 on the Mac, but all went well in Firefox 2/Windows, so Mac users, proceed with caution. Simple Mail is missing features you'd expect in a full-blown client—in fact, I couldn't get it to see the folders on Gmail's IMAP server. However, it does give you that desktop feel without having to run or switch to a separate application. Simple Mail is a free download for Firefox only. Thanks, Masa!

6 Vote(s)

Hi - I just finished my first Firefox extension and would love opinions/comments/suggestions on it.It's not only an extension, but also part of a service to build free image galleries on the web.To install the extension please go here:www.lovehorsepower.com/gallerymaker.xpiAfter restarting Firefox, choose the tools menu, and select 'Gallery Maker Setup'. A simple dialog appears - enter your email address, and click the 'Create New Account/Lost Password' button. That's all there is to signing up. The service will email you a new password. Place that password into the same dialog box, hit OK, and you're ready to start! You can right click any image within Firefox and add it to your gallery, or make a new gallery. You can also add all the images from a page. All the 'work' is done on the server, and when processing is complete, it will email you. The system only adds 'good' images - ie images of at least a certain resolution and byte size. This avoids icons, banners etc..You can also perform a 'deep scan' of a page which will follow links one level searching for images. You can queue up as many jobs as you want. The galleries are copies of the images, not just links - so even if the source disappears, you'll still have your gallery. The galleries also support youtube videos. Here is what the gallery selector looks like from within Firefox:Here is the gallery manager (accessible through right click menu). From here you can delete galleries, and delete individual images from your gallery.Right clicking an image from the gallery manager pulls up the full size image like this: Here is a sample gallery:http://www.lovehorsepower.com/galleries/44269331/EVO_Gallery/album/As an another example gallery, I 'deep scanned' the web site icanhascheezburger.com, which resulted in:http://www.lovehorsepower.com/galleries/44269331/CheeseDS/album/Just a few clicks, and you have a gallery! As a side note, you can also email the service to add images.Just send an email to images@lovehorsepower.com. In the subject line, put the name of your gallery, and then attach images and send. Those images will then be added to your gallery, or you can also create a new one.I certainly appreciate any comments, and if you happen across a bug, please let me know! Thanks in advance for your review!

8 Vote(s)

My Firefox add-ons count can change daily depending on what I'm doing. Some add-ons I'll never (want to) let go of and some get replaced when another comes along. But I pretty much hover around 48- 50. Today I happen to be at 54 and this is a week old profile. It amazes me how well Firefox continues to run despite the fact that I put boulders on its back (so to speak).I thought that I'd share my current add-ons list.
I don't know if anyone reads The Circle Panel who doesn't also read YUIBlog, but if you missed Joe Hewitt's talk on Firebug coinciding with the Firebug 1.0 release last week, check it out as soon as possible. I thought I was using Firebug pretty thoroughly -- it had even persuaded me to abandoned my beloved Safari for the much slower Firefox on my G4 PowerBook. But I didn't know a damn thing about Firebug, I realized, after watching Joe's talk. This is a tool that, when used well, can change the way you understand your own web applications and even those in which you simply take a casual interest. If you're a web developer, watch this video. A higher-resolution version is available from the YUI Theater.
