It’s Official - Firefox Surpasses 20% Worldwide Market Share

Congratulations to the Mozilla community for reaching this historic milestone!

For the first time in either a weekly or monthly period, Firefox surpassed 20% worldwide market share (according to Net Applications). You can read the featured report here.

Do Ads Driving Firefox Downloads Affect Firefox Downloads?

We've previously talked extensively about one of Mozilla's core marketing tactics - search engine marketing. One of the questions we always come back to is: "what macro level effect does this activity have?" In other words, we know this channel is driving clicks and Firefox downloads every day, but is this effort actually aiding Firefox adoption in some way?

Mozilla Security Metrics Project

Mozilla has been working with security researcher and analyst Rich Mogull for a few months now on a project to develop a metrics model to measure the relative security of Firefox over time. We are trying to develop a model that goes beyond simple bug counts and more accurately reflects both the effectiveness of secure development efforts, and the relative risk to users over time. Our goal in this first phase of the project is to build a baseline model we can evolve over time as we learn what works, and what does not. We do not think any model can define an absolute level of security, so we decided to take the approach of tracking metrics over time so we can track relative improvements (or declines), and identify any problem spots. This information will support the development of Mozilla projects including future versions of Firefox.

Firefox Market Share Update and a Perspective on Firefox 3

Yesterday, Net Applications released its latest market share report for May 2008. Firefox showed a nice improvement in the April to May timeframe, going from 17.76% to 18.41% worldwide market share. Net Applications provides their own interpretation here. The interesting part of the story is that while Firefox 3 continues to show rapid adoption, most of our growth was driven by increased usage of Firefox 2. In other words, Firefox 3 adoption is not coming at the expense of Firefox 2 usage (it’s not simply the case of existing users updating from Fx2 to Fx3). Clearly, the overall health of the Firefox brand is amazingly strong as we head towards the official release of Firefox 3.
